Guitar making lessons In Peterborough

Make your own guitar

We teach guitar making classes on Saturday afternoons in Ramsey, Cambridgeshire, we keep the classes small and personal to ensure a friendly learning environment. A couple of our students come during weekdays and this can be arranged. The classes are held at my premises where I will be making, repairing and setting up customer’s instruments alongside the students, so they get a wide knowledge of the kinds of problems that I am undertaking as a luthier and the processes and tools that I use to tackle them.

Students start with a drawing of the model and design they wish to make and are taught how to make all of their own moulds and templates.

Current student projects include acoustic guitars in the style of the Martin 00 and 000 guitars, some with cutaways. One student is currently making a guitar in the style of a Gibson J200 and another a hand carved jazz guitar. Others are making electric guitars which are influenced by the styles of famous guitar models such as the Les Paul, SG, Stratocaster and Telecaster styles with bodies and necks being hand carved and hand finished. Students complete all the work with guidance and workshop supplied tools, although most students gradually build up their own tools and are given instruction and guidance on maintaining and sharpening their chisels, gouges and plane irons.

Students are also encouraged to personalise their instruments with inlays and are coached through all the stages of designing and cutting out their own inlays from mother of pearl or abalone and actually inlaying into the headstock of their instrument.

All wood materials are sourced from professional luthier suppliers and guidance is given on sourcing the electronics and other hardware necessary to complete their projects. Instruction is given on basic electronics related to guitars such as understanding how potentiometers, resistors and capacitors work as well as practical guidance on using a soldering iron and multimeter to check resistance etc.

The workshop is open every Saturday all year around and potential new students are welcome to arrange a time to come and visit us and meet the other students during any Saturday session.
